Tesla is once again under legal scrutiny as it faces trial over a 2019 crash allegedly involving its Autopilot system, with new court documents revealing a fierce debate over whether the car gave a critical alert moments before the fatal incident. The lawsuit, brought by the family of a 37-year-old California man who died in a collision while driving a Model 3, could have significant implications for the electric carmaker’s claims about the safety and capabilities of its semi-autonomous technology.
The case, currently being heard in a California state court, centers around the events of March 2019, when the victim’s Tesla veered off the highway and slammed into a concrete barrier in Mountain View. The vehicle was reportedly operating in Autopilot mode at the time of the crash. Tesla has long stated that Autopilot is intended only as a driver-assistance tool and that drivers must keep their hands on the wheel and stay attentive at all times.
However, attorneys for the victim’s family argue that the vehicle failed to adequately warn the driver before disengaging or making a critical error. According to them, the car’s software either failed to issue an alert in time or the alert system was too subtle to draw the driver’s attention. They claim Tesla’s marketing misleads consumers into overestimating Autopilot’s capabilities, fostering a false sense of security behind the wheel.
In its defense, Tesla contends that Autopilot did issue multiple warnings and that the driver ignored repeated prompts to keep his hands on the wheel. Company lawyers pointed to data logs showing that the system had alerted the driver seconds before the crash and that he failed to take control. “Autopilot is not a self-driving system,” Tesla’s attorney said during opening arguments. “This tragedy occurred because the driver misused the system and didn’t heed the warnings.”
The trial has reignited the long-standing debate over Tesla’s branding and its use of terms like “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving” (FSD). Critics, including safety advocates and regulators, have argued that such language misleads consumers into thinking the car can drive itself, when in fact human intervention is often required. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has previously cited Tesla for lacking adequate safeguards to prevent driver misuse.
