MAJOR UKRAINIAN DRONE ATTACKS SOW CHAOS AT MOSCOW’S AIRPORTS
In a bold escalation of cross-border hostilities, Ukraine launched a series of drone attacks targeting key infrastructure in and around Moscow, causing severe disruption at some of Russia’s busiest airports. The drone strikes, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, triggered air raid sirens, delayed dozens of flights, and heightened anxiety among Russian civilians already wearied by the prolonged conflict.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, at least 15 drones were intercepted or jammed while approaching Moscow, but several reportedly managed to breach air defenses, causing alarm across the capital. The primary targets appeared to be Moscow’s Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Sheremetyevo airports—three major aviation hubs that together handle tens of millions of passengers annually. Authorities temporarily suspended flight operations at all three facilities, grounding aircraft and diverting inbound flights as a precaution.
Videos posted to social media showed bright flashes in the night sky and the sound of explosions, presumably from anti-aircraft fire or drone interceptions. Some reports suggested minor damage to airport infrastructure, although Russian officials claimed there were no casualties and that air traffic was restored within hours. Nevertheless, the psychological and logistical impact was significant, with thousands of travelers stranded and international flights disrupted.
Ukrainian officials did not officially confirm their involvement in the drone offensive, maintaining Kyiv’s policy of strategic ambiguity regarding attacks on Russian soil. However, a senior Ukrainian defense source speaking anonymously to Western media said the operation was a “direct response to ongoing Russian missile strikes against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, including power plants and residential areas.”
This latest round of drone attacks marks one of the most extensive Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory since the war began. It highlights Kyiv’s growing capability to project power deep into Russia using domestically developed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Ukrainian forces have increasingly relied on long-range drones to circumvent Russia’s superior air power and strike symbolic or strategic targets, particularly in and around Moscow, to destabilize the Kremlin’s image of control.
The drone campaign comes at a time when Ukraine is pressing for more military aid from Western allies, particularly long-range missiles and advanced air defense systems. Analysts suggest these attacks may be aimed at demonstrating Ukraine’s ability to disrupt Russian infrastructure and force the Kremlin to divert resources away from the frontlines.
In response, the Kremlin condemned the drone strikes as “acts of terrorism” and vowed retaliation. Russian President Vladimir Putin convened an emergency security meeting to assess the situation and ordered heightened surveillance and air defense readiness across the country.
The international community remains divided. While NATO countries have largely supported Ukraine’s right to self-defense, concerns are growing over the risk of escalation and potential strikes on high-value Russian targets, which could broaden the conflict.
